Mission

Hope (hop) v.  To want or wish for something with a feeling of confident expectation.

Our family’s hope is to raise public awareness of mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE), sponsor high school age young men and women interested in carrying on Kaitlin's dreams, and to do our part in discovering a cure.

Kaitlin's hope was to be strong enough to finish high school, pursue her dreams of a college education, and to do her part to change the world by becoming a teacher.

We reach out to you.  We ask you to help us.  Together we can keep hope’s flame burning.  We invite you to be a part of our family, to join the fight, and to help us find a cure.

The mitochondria are the “powerhouses” of the cell. Mitochondrial diseases can affect many different systems of the body, primarily the nervous system, heart, lungs, and muscles.

The mitochondria are possibly the oldest part of the cell. Their origin dates back to the oldest single celled organisms. Mitochondria contain their own DNA, separate from that of the rest of the body. Despite their age, this separate DNA has not yet been fully evaluated by scientists.

Although mitochondrial disease was discovered over 40 years ago, little is known about the cause of, or treatments for this disease.  Advances in genetic technology have allowed doctors and scientists to better understand the function of the mitochondria. This is just the beginning of a long road………..
